Patrick Vieira takes charge of Senegal's Lions of Teranga
Patrick Vieira is officially the new head coach of Senegal's senior national team. The Senegalese Football Federation unanimously approved his appointment, opening a new chapter after Pape Thiaw's departure following the 2026 World Cup.
The decision was ratified on Monday, August 17, 2026, by the Emergency Committee of the Senegalese Football Federation, which met in an extraordinary session. Vieira thus succeeds Pape Thiaw, becoming the new leading figure of the Lions of Teranga. The administrative and contractual details of his appointment are still being finalized, while the FSF will announce the date of his official presentation and the next steps of his installation at a later time.
Nearly a decade on the touchline
Patrick Vieira arrives in Senegal with almost ten years of coaching experience under his belt. After starting out in Manchester City's academy staff in 2013, the former midfielder took charge of his first professional club, New York City FC, in January 2016. He then managed OGC Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and most recently Genoa, his last post before landing on the Senegalese bench.
His track record isn’t that of a manager who racks up trophies. Vieira has yet to win a major title as a coach, but he has steadily built up experience across multiple environments and leagues. In New York, he notably transformed a fledgling team into genuine contenders, leading them to a historic playoff qualification in his debut season and a second-place finish in the 2017 regular season. At Nice, he guided the club to fifth place in Ligue 1 in the 2019-2020 campaign, before experiencing more mixed spells at Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa.
A team already at the summit
The Senegalese challenge, however, is on another level. Vieira is not inheriting a team in transition, but rather a side firmly established among the elite of Africa and the world. Senegal currently sits second in Africa and 18th in the FIFA World Ranking.
More importantly, he follows in the footsteps of two coaches who have left their mark on the Lions' recent history. Under Aliou Cissé, Senegal clinched their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022. Pape Thiaw then helped them retain the continental crown in 2025, after a particularly controversial final against Morocco. The Senegalese side remains on an exceptional run, having reached the finals in the most recent editions of the AFCON.
This is precisely what makes Vieira's mission so demanding. He won't just be expected to maintain momentum—he'll need to build on it. Expectations will be sky-high for a generation of players accustomed to major tournaments and hungry for more silverware. His pedigree as a top-level player, international experience, and stints in several European leagues are definite assets, but the lack of a major trophy as a manager remains a question mark.
This first stint in charge of a national team will be a real test. Vieira knows the pressure of the highest level from his playing days—especially with France—but now he must handle it from the sidelines. Born in Dakar and a former French international with 107 caps, the new coach also has a special bond with Senegal.
It's now up to him to turn that experience into results and keep the Lions among the giants of African football.
