Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has described the marquee acquisition of Egyptian international Mohamed Salah as a transformative cultural milestone that extends far beyond the football pitch.

A cultural and humanitarian impact

Speaking to Egyptian television channel On Sport, Dogan reflected on the profound social and emotional impact the 34 year old winger has had on the city since completing his high profile move following nine trophy laden years at Liverpool.

Rejecting anticipated moves to the Saudi Pro League or Major League Soccer, Salah's decision to move to the Black Sea coast has generated widespread enthusiasm among supporters.

"Our greatest gain from the Mohamed Salah deal is the moral boost experienced by the fans.. The Turkish people in this city wake up and go to sleep to the name of Mohamed Salah and his chants. We are living this joyful moment and great enthusiasm" Dogan said.

Dogan also praised Salah's character and instant chemistry with his new teammates at Mehmet Ali Yılmaz Facilities.

"We firmly believe we have completed a humanitarian signing for an exceptional personality, one of the most important players in the world, if not the very best.. From his very first day, he created a wonderful atmosphere with his teammates, and in my view, that is the greatest contribution of his arrival to the city. We brought them happiness and we are thrilled by that" Dogan continued.

Highlighting the wider diplomatic and cultural significance of the transfer, the Trabzonspor chief noted:

"Mohamed Salah's transfer carries weight beyond football. It is a source of joy for the Islamic world as he is a committed Muslim athlete. He will leave a positive mark across many fields and will serve as a bridge to strengthen relations between our two brotherly nations"

Title race opens up after dramatic matchday 1

Trabzonspor opened their Super Lig campaign with a 1-1 draw against Kasimpasa where Salah made a dynamic 32 minute debut off the bench and narrowly missed a late winning goal.

However, the opening round of Turkish football saw major surprises among the league's top contenders. Defending champions Galatasaray dropped points in a draw against a newly promoted side while last season's runners up Fenerbahce suffered an opening day defeat.

Having finished third in the table last season, Trabzonspor are determined to capitalise on their rivals' early slip ups to mount a serious title challenge.
