South Korea: Hong Myung-bo resigns as national team coach

Hong Myung-bo is no longer the head coach of South Korea. The South Korean tactician has announced his departure after the Taeguk Warriors were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup at the group stage.

Hong Myung-bo leaves his post with a record of 45 matches: 20 wins, 9 draws, and 16 losses. This early exit echoes the disappointment of 2014, also under his leadership, when South Korea crashed out in the opening round.

Following the defeat against South Africa, criticism intensified across the country. According to several South Korean media outlets, Hong Myung-bo returned to Korea as discreetly as possible to avoid the wrath of the fans.

KBS, the country's main public broadcaster, also demonstrated its displeasure by blurring the coach's face during the broadcast of his press conference—a symbolic gesture that underscores the depth of disappointment caused by this World Cup campaign.
