Spain extended its unbeaten run to 39 matches by beating England (3-2) at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, in the opening round of the 2026–2027 Nations League. The sequence began on March 26, 2024, against Brazil and has since been marked by two major titles: Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.

Spain’s current run did not begin with a win, but with a draw. On March 26, 2024, La Roja were held by Brazil (3-3) at the Santiago Bernabéu. This result marked the beginning of the unbeaten sequence, which the Spanish federation dates back to that day.

Four days earlier, Spain had lost to Colombia (1-0) in London. That defeat is therefore not part of the run.

Since the match against Brazil, Spain had played 38 matches without suffering defeat before arriving at Wembley. Its record at that point stood at 29 wins and nine draws, according to the RFEF.

Two major titles during the run

This lengthy sequence accompanied Spain in the two major competitions played since March 2024. La Roja first won Euro 2024, before continuing its unbeaten run. It then won the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In the final, on July 19, 2026, Spain beat Argentina (1-0 after extra time) thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres in the 106th minute. The victory secured its second world title and extended its unbeaten run to 38 matches.

The achievement was historic: with 38 consecutive matches without defeat, Spain surpassed the previous record of 37 matches set by Italy between 2018 and 2021. The RFEF and Guinness World Records presented the run as a new world record for a men’s national team.

The penalty shootout defeat against Portugal does not end the run

One detail must be clarified in the count. In the 2025 Nations League final, Spain drew 2-2 with Portugal after extra time before losing in the penalty shootout.

In the count of unbeaten matches, this game is considered a draw because the score was level after extra time. The penalty shootout defeat therefore did not interrupt the statistical run.

England extends the run to 39 matches

Spain returned to competition nearly ten weeks after its world title triumph with a trip to Wembley. Against England, La Roja won 3-2, thanks in particular to Mikel Oyarzabal’s decisive goal. Lamine Yamal also scored for Spain. This victory therefore extended the Spanish national team’s unbeaten run since March 26, 2024, to 39 matches.

In 914 days, La Roja went from a draw against Brazil to two major titles and a world unbeaten-record run. Its next match is scheduled for September 29 in Seville against Croatia, in the second round of the 2026–2027 Nations League.
