Spain: Jesús de Miguel dies, Jesus Owono breaks his silence

More than forty-eight hours after the tragedy that claimed the life of Jesús de Miguel, Equatorial Guinea international Jesus Owono has spoken out.

On Monday evening, during a Spanish second-division match between Tenerife and Andorra FC, Jesús de Miguel was struck by opposing goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who had come out of his area to intercept the ball. Following the collision, the striker died of his injuries overnight. The news sent shockwaves across Spain.

Jesus Owono faces severe criticism

As Tenerife, its supporters, and, of course, the victim’s family and loved ones mourn his death, Jesus Owono has been targeted on social media. The Equatorial Guinean goalkeeper has received hateful messages and racist abuse, and has even been accused of deliberately causing a death. He was forced to close all his accounts. Meanwhile, he offered his apologies and condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel. He is at rock bottom.

Owono breaks his silence with a poignant message

In a statement released by his club on Wednesday, Jesus Owono responded to the tragic news. He described the terrible emotions he has been experiencing since the accident. “These are the hardest days of my life. It’s difficult for me to find the words, and I’m struggling to take in everything that has happened. I feel immense pain over the loss of Jesús. I’m thinking of him, his family and everyone who loved him,” he said.

Regarding the investigation that has already been opened, Owono said: “I know there will be a lot to deal with, and I will face whatever comes with all due respect. But for now, honestly, I can’t think of anything other than Jesús and the pain we are going through. Rest in peace, Jesús.”
