Since Monday evening, the Andorra FC goalkeeper, Jesus Owono, has been struggling to cope with the tragedy during the match against Tenerife. He collided heavily with Jesus de Miguel. As a result, the Spanish player died.

The terrible news was confirmed on Tuesday morning. After suffering cardiorespiratory arrest following a collision with Andorra FC goalkeeper Jesus Owono, Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel died in hospital. Since Monday evening, the football world in Spain and internationally has been in shock, and tributes have been pouring in. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have already expressed their condolences.

“I am sorry, from the bottom of my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus,” wrote Gerard Piqué, former FC Barcelona centre-back and owner of Andorra FC.

Jesus Owono heavily criticised

In this tragedy, one man has been singled out. It is, of course, Jesus Owono, the Andorran club’s goalkeeper. After making a very dangerous challenge on De Miguel, with his knee raised and causing a huge collision, the Equatorial Guinean goalkeeper has faced a wave of intense criticism since the match was stopped on Monday evening.

The goalkeeper obviously had no intention of causing Jesus de Miguel’s death. Cadena COPE reported that Jesus Owono was devastated and deeply distressed after learning of the death. He had also planned to apologise privately to Jesus De Miguel’s family.

At Andorra, it has been stressed that the player was genuinely distraught, but that he had no intention of causing harm.

A minute’s silence

The death of Jesus de Miguel has caused deep emotion in Spanish football and beyond. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin also paid tribute to the forward. “We search for words and find only silence. In this silence, our hearts and thoughts go out to his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife and all those mourning this tragic loss,” he wrote.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also expressed its profound sadness and sent its condolences to the player’s family, loved ones, club and supporters. In tribute to Jesús de Miguel Alameda, a minute’s silence will be observed before all UEFA matches taking place this week. It is another sign of solidarity following this tragedy, which has shaken Spanish football.
