Stuttgart: Lorenz Assignon returns to the pitch after shoulder surgery

Lorenz Assignon returned to the pitch with VfB Stuttgart after undergoing shoulder surgery. The Togolese full-back made his comeback in a 3-0 friendly win over Heidenheim last Friday, scoring a spectacular bicycle-kick goal.

After undergoing shoulder surgery, Lorenz Assignon had to wait before returning to competition. The 26-year-old defender finally played his first minutes in this friendly against Heidenheim.

“I’m doing well, everything went well. I’m very happy to finally be back on the pitch and able to play again,” Assignon explained in an interview published on Wednesday by VfB Stuttgart.

On his return, the Togolese player also made his mark in the opposition penalty area. Set up by Jamie Leweling, he scored Stuttgart’s second goal with an acrobatic volley. It is a goal he appreciates, even though he does not consider it the best of his career.

“It was certainly a very beautiful goal, but not the best in my eyes,” he said, notably recalling several goals he scored with Rennes in the Europa League.

Two friendlies to continue his comeback

The international break is allowing Assignon to gradually continue his return to full fitness. The player is working in particular on his mobility, his aggression in duels and his defensive interventions.

“I feel that I’m gradually regaining all my energy on the pitch. Training with the team also helps me,” he explained.

Assignon should have another opportunity to accumulate playing time on Thursday, October 1, when Stuttgart face Greuther Fürth in a friendly at the WIRmachenDRUCK Arena in Aspach, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The defender sees these two friendlies as important steps in assessing his level of recovery and identifying the areas that still need improvement.

“I’m happy with every minute of playing time I get,” he concluded.
