Mohamed Salah overcame concerns about playing on artificial turf to score, provide an assist and achieve a rare European milestone as Trabzonspor defeated Finland's KuPS Kuopio 4-2 in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday 15 October.

The 34 year old Egyptian international delivered an outstanding first half performance at Tammela Stadium in Tampere helping the Turkish side secure three points in their opening match of the 2026 /27 Conference League league phase.

Wearing Trabzonspor's captain's armband for the first time, Salah assisted Paul Onuachu's opening goal after just 3 minutes before scoring himself in the 44th minute.

His contribution came despite days of speculation surrounding his willingness to play on an artificial surface, an issue that had already affected his international commitments with Egypt.

Mohamed Salah joins Gakpo and Götze in historic European achievement

Salah's goal and assist earned him a place in an exclusive group of players in European football history.

According to statistical specialists Opta, the Egyptian became only the third player to have both scored and assisted in matches across all three major UEFA club competitions: the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

The only other players to achieve the feat are Liverpool's Cody Gakpo and former Germany international Mario Götze.

The milestone adds another distinction to Salah's European career, which includes becoming the first African player to reach 50 Champions League goals.

His strike against KuPS was also his first European goal for Trabzonspor having previously featured in the club's Europa League qualifying campaign without scoring.

According to UEFA's official goalscoring records, Salah entered Thursday's match with 65 goal in European club competitions.

His latest strike took his total to 66, moving him ahead of Erling Haaland's 65 and leaving him just one goal behind Edin Džeko and Andriy Shevchenko, who have 67 each.

Salah answers artificial turf concerns with goal and assist

Salah's participation had been uncertain because of the synthetic playing surface in Finland.

As Foot Africa reported before the KuPS encounter, Trabzonspor had been weighing the potential risks of selecting the forward.

The situation followed Egypt's decision to rest Salah against South Sudan during September's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers because of concerns about artificial turf.

However, Salah started against KuPS and immediately influenced the contest.

His third minute pass released Nigerian striker Onuachu who finished confidently to give Trabzonspor an early lead.

Onuachu was subsequently forced off through injury, with Guinea-Bissau international Franculino Djú replacing him in the 10th minute.

Salah then doubled Trabzonspor's advantage shortly before half-time, finishing from the right side of the penalty area after receiving a pass from Wagner Pina.

The Egyptian was substituted in the 55th minute ending his involvement with one goal and one assist.

UEFA's official statistics confirm both contributions.

African stars lead Trabzonspor to victory

Salah was not the only African player to make an impact in the 4-2 victory.

Franculino Djú scored twice, in the 47th and 91st minutes, after replacing the injured Onuachu.

KuPS responded through Petteri Pennanen who scored directly from a corner in the 54th minute, before Gustav Engvall added a late consolation goal.

Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana also experienced an eventful evening, conceding Pennanen's unusual equaliser attempt before saving a second half penalty.

The result highlighted the importance of Trabzonspor's African contingent, with Salah, Onuachu and Franculino responsible for all 4 goal.

It also extended Salah's remarkable start to life in Turkish football.

The Egyptian had already registered seven goals and three assists in his first seven Süper Lig appearances, setting a notable early-season record.
