Transfer: Ghanaian Sayibu Yakubu joins MFK Karviná in the Czech Republic

The Ghanaian centre-back Sayibu Yakubu takes the next step in his career. The 20-year-old has officially signed with Czech top-flight side MFK Karviná, arriving from Finnish club SJK Seinäjoki.

After an impressive season in Finland, Yakubu leaves SJK to take on a new challenge in the Czech league. Both clubs reached an agreement for a permanent transfer, with Karviná paying a transfer fee to the Finnish club.

Having joined SJK in the spring of 2024, the Ghanaian defender steadily gained experience and established himself as a promising presence in the squad. His performances caught the eye of Karviná’s management, who see him as a player capable of strengthening their defense for the long term.

Already adapting to his new environment

The young defender’s transfer was quickly finalized following his medical. Yakubu has already joined his new teammates and taken part in pre-season preparations with his new club. In a friendly against Polish side Ruch Chorzów, he notably showcased his aerial prowess and composure on the ball.

MFK Karviná’s sporting director, Lubomír Vlk, welcomed the signing, saying the Ghanaian’s profile fits the club’s expectations.

“We were looking for a defender who matches our playing philosophy. Sayibu made a strong impression on us. He’s still young and we need to work with him, but I’m convinced he’ll become a valuable asset for the team,” he said.

For his part, Sayibu Yakubu expressed his delight at joining his new club and his eagerness to begin this adventure in the Czech Republic.

“I am very happy to have joined my new team. I enjoyed my first training sessions and first matches. I’m here to help Karviná win and I look forward to making new friends,” said the Ghanaian defender.
