Transfer market: Jules Koundé on Chelsea’s radar for the January window

Jules Koundé could be one of the options Chelsea are monitoring during the next winter transfer window. According to TEAMtalk, the French FC Barcelona defender could be available as early as January and is of particular interest to the Blues, who had already tried to sign him in 2022.

Chelsea are believed to have maintained their interest in Koundé despite the failure of that initial attempt. According to TEAMtalk, new London head coach Xabi Alonso would like to strengthen the right side of his defence and appreciates the Frenchman’s versatility, as he can play both at right-back and in the centre.

Koundé playing less at Barça

The player’s sporting situation is believed to have contributed to renewed speculation about his future. Koundé has lost playing time under Hansi Flick and has reportedly started just one La Liga match this season, according to information reported by TEAMtalk. Eric Garcia has notably been used more often at right-back.

This decline in his status opens the door to a possible departure. TEAMtalk claims that FC Barcelona have informed the player’s representatives that a sale could be considered in 2027, while leaving open the possibility of a transfer as early as January.

Chelsea are not alone

The London club would not be the only candidate. Liverpool are also believed to have been informed of the defender’s potential availability, while Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are also monitoring his situation.

Bayern Munich are also believed to be keeping an eye on the situation. The German club are looking for solutions to strengthen their defence and could make a move for Koundé if he does indeed become available this winter.

Having joined FC Barcelona in 2022 after his transfer from Sevilla FC, Koundé chose the Catalan club despite Chelsea’s advanced interest at the time. Four years later, a move to Stamford Bridge could once again be on the agenda. At this stage, however, this is only one possibility: no agreement between Koundé and Chelsea, or between the two clubs, has been announced.
