Transfer market: Musa Maliq signs with Zulte Waregem

Musa Maliq Omotayo takes another step forward in his young career. The 18-year-old Nigerian winger has officially joined SV Zulte Waregem from Ikorodu City, on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

The Belgian club is banking on Maliq's potential to strengthen its development project. After passing his medical and taking part in his first training session with his new teammates, the young Nigerian will begin his journey with Jong Essevee, Zulte Waregem’s reserve squad, allowing him to gradually adapt to European football and progress through the various stages of his development.

Born in Oyo, Nigeria, Maliq discovered football at Ikorodu City, where he quickly made a name for himself with his attacking qualities. Despite his youth, he had already made a significant leap by joining the Nigerian national team environment at just 16. His winger profile, coupled with his speed and ability to take on defenders, attracted attention beyond Nigerian borders.

Zulte Waregem wants to take its time

Zulte Waregem’s sporting director, Davy De fauw, is keen to stress the importance of taking a measured approach with the young player. “Maliq has immense potential, but he’s still very young,” he explained, emphasizing that the club wants to provide him with the right environment to continue his development.

This approach explains why he will start out with Jong Essevee. Zulte Waregem sees his arrival as a medium-term investment rather than an immediate solution for the first team. The option to buy included in the loan also gives the Belgian club the flexibility to extend the adventure should the player’s progress live up to expectations.

A talent already watched in Europe

Arriving in Belgium marks Maliq’s first real test away from Nigeria. He had already attracted interest on the European market, notably from FC Barcelona, who reportedly considered inviting him for a trial over the summer.

At Zulte Waregem, the young Nigerian now has the platform to turn his promise into performances. His first goal will be to adapt, get playing time, and prove he can rapidly rise through the ranks of European football. For the Belgian club, the plan is clear: nurture a raw talent and give him the tools to unlock his full potential.
