Transfer window: Chelsea sign Argentinian Valentín Barco

Chelsea continues its recruitment policy focused on young talents with high potential. The London club has officially announced the arrival of Valentín Barco from RC Strasbourg. The versatile 22-year-old Argentinian midfielder has signed a long-term contract until 2033 and will join the Blues during pre-season under the guidance of Xabi Alonso.

This transfer rewards the rapid rise of a player who has been regarded for several years as one of Argentina's brightest football prospects. Able to play in central midfield, as a wing-back, or in a more attacking role on the left flank, Barco brings technique, creativity, and the ability to break the lines.

A breakthrough season with Strasbourg

Valentín Barco reached a new milestone during his spell in Alsace. Arriving at Strasbourg in the winter of 2025 on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, he quickly adapted to French football.

During the second half of the 2024-2025 season, he played 15 matches for Racing and helped secure the club's qualification for European competition. Impressed by his potential, Strasbourg then decided to activate the option for a permanent transfer.

The following season, the Argentinian international cemented his importance in the Alsace squad. He featured in 43 matches across all competitions, including 14 European fixtures, and played a key role in Racing's historic run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League. In total, Barco was involved in 12 goals throughout the season.

Wearing the Strasbourg shirt, he ultimately played 58 matches, scored 3 goals, and left the impression of a player capable of influencing the game with his technical quality and personality.

An already rich career at just 22

Developed at Boca Juniors, Valentín Barco rose quickly through the ranks. He made his professional debut at just 16 and won several trophies with the Argentinian club before joining Brighton in 2024.

His English adventure included several loan spells, notably at Sevilla FC and then Strasbourg, which allowed him to rack up valuable playing time and continue developing in different environments.

His club performances also earned him a place in the Argentinian national team. Selected for the 2026 World Cup squad, Barco currently has five international caps with the Albiceleste.

With this signing, Chelsea continue to invest in players capable of becoming key figures in the medium term. Valentín Barco arrives with significant experience despite his young age and will now have to prove his potential in one of the most competitive squads in the Premier League.
