Transfer window: Darlin Yongwa joins Norwich City
Darlin Yongwa has found a new destination since the end of his contract with FC Lorient last June. The Cameroonian left-back has officially signed with Norwich City, a Championship club. The 25-year-old has penned a four-year deal with the Canaries, tying him to the English side until June 2030.
This move marks a fresh milestone in the defender’s career, as he is set to experience a league renowned for its physical intensity and high tempo.
"I am very happy. I always dreamed of playing in England, and Norwich City is a historic club," said Yongwa after signing his contract.
A strong final season with Lorient
Before heading to England, Darlin Yongwa spent four seasons in the colors of FC Lorient. Despite Lorient’s sporting struggles last season, the Cameroonian maintained a key role in the Breton squad.
He featured in 23 Ligue 1 matches, showcasing his consistency at the highest level of French football. Since joining Lorient, Yongwa has racked up 97 appearances in all competitions for the club—a significant run following three seasons in the top flight.
Comfortable both as a left-back and in a more attacking role on the flank, he stood out for his athleticism, speed, and relentless running. His profile as a modern player—capable of defending robustly while contributing going forward—convinced Norwich to make their move.
From Douala to Ligue 1: a patient, steady rise
Darlin Yongwa’s journey is one of gradual progression. Trained in Douala at one of Cameroon’s renowned academies, he made the leap to Europe in 2019 by joining Chamois Niortais.
In France, he discovered professional football and gradually earned more playing time. Wearing the Niort shirt, he played 73 matches, a crucial step in his development before taking things up a notch with Lorient.
His arrival at Lorient allowed him to discover Ligue 1 and test himself against the best players in the French championship. Over four seasons, he established himself as a reliable figure down the left flank and drew attention beyond French borders.
A Cameroonian international ready for the Championship
With Norwich City, Darlin Yongwa now aims to take his game to the next level. The English club is counting on his explosiveness and work rate to bolster their defense and help them in their quest to return to the Premier League.
The Cameroonian also brings international experience to the table. Capped 14 times by the Indomitable Lions, he made his debut for the national team in September 2022 against Uzbekistan and scored his first international goal in January 2024 versus Zambia.
At Norwich, Yongwa joins an environment where several fellow Cameroonians are also striving to make their mark. His twin objectives: help the Canaries achieve their sporting ambitions and continue to raise his profile with the national team selectors.
