Transfer window: Stanley Nwabali makes his big return to Chippa United

It’s now official. Nigerian international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is back at Chippa United, just a few months after leaving the club by mutual agreement.

The South African club enthusiastically announced the return of the Super Eagles’ shot-stopper in an official statement:

“Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back. After some time away, he returns to the Eastern Cape and we are happy to have him back among the Chilli Boys.”

A hoped-for transfer that never materialized

After his departure last February, Nwabali was looking to take on a new challenge. Despite numerous transfer rumors, the 30-year-old goalkeeper ultimately failed to secure a move to a new club.

Back in South Africa, he has been training for several days with Chippa United under new head coach Brandon Truter, preparing for the 2026-2027 season.

A return after a successful AFCON

Nwabali left Chippa United after returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco. With Nigeria, he helped the Super Eagles clinch third place, defeating Egypt in a penalty shootout.

His departure surprised many observers, especially since Chippa United were battling to stay up in the Betway Premiership at the time.

Competition reignited

In the Nigerian’s absence, Dumisani Msibi established himself as the first-choice keeper. The South African ended the season in top form, recording five clean sheets and even captaining the side. His performances brought him close to a first-ever national team call-up.

The return of Stanley Nwabali now promises fierce competition between the posts for the Chilli Boys as the new season approaches.
