Tunisia: Hervé Renard linked to replace Sabri Lamouchi during the World Cup
The Tunisian national team could be on the verge of a major shake-up at the helm right in the middle of the 2026 World Cup. After the Carthage Eagles suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match, Sabri Lamouchi is reportedly closer than ever to the exit. In this context, Hervé Renard's name is being strongly suggested as his successor.
The hours following the crushing loss to Sweden were marked by confusion within the Tunisian Football Federation. According to several sources, the FTF considered dismissing Sabri Lamouchi even before the team's second game of the tournament.
The federation added to the uncertainty by briefly announcing on its social media channels the departure of the Franco-Tunisian coach and his replacement by Mondher Kebaier, only to quickly delete the post. Meanwhile, the executive board gathered in Monterrey to discuss the coach's future.
Hervé Renard, an increasingly credible option
In this climate of uncertainty, Hervé Renard's name has emerged as a serious candidate. Several reports on Monday night claimed that the Tunisian Federation had already contacted the former Saudi Arabia coach to offer him not only an immediate rescue mission but also a longer-term project beyond the 2026 World Cup.
Since leaving the Saudi national team just weeks before the World Cup, the French tactician has enjoyed a solid reputation across Africa, thanks to his successes with Zambia and Ivory Coast.
A challenge as risky as it is ambitious
The prospect of Hervé Renard taking charge of Tunisia in the middle of an international tournament is, nevertheless, a surprising one. The situation is especially tricky: the team is struggling, the federation is under immense pressure, and qualification hopes are already in jeopardy after the opening rout.
But the former Green Falcons boss could well be tempted by the chance to return to the World Cup stage and take on a high-stakes sporting challenge.
At this stage, no official decision has yet been announced regarding Sabri Lamouchi. Whether he stays or goes should be decided by FTF leaders in the coming hours.
