Russia could be making its comeback in a competition organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), marking the first time since its suspension in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine. A Russian squad would be allowed to take part in the U15 World Cup scheduled for October in Azerbaijan.

This new youth tournament, recently introduced by FIFA, will bring together several national men's teams. The statement from the host organization mentions participation is open to all member associations, which could potentially include Russia.

This development marks the first crack in the sporting isolation of the country, which has been excluded from all major international competitions for over two years.

A suspension still in effect at senior level

However, this is not a full-scale return. Russian senior national teams remain suspended from official competitions, including World Cup qualifiers and major international tournaments.

The situation at the top of world football remains unchanged, even if this opening for youth teams can be seen as a sign of a gradual softening.
