UEFA pays tribute to Marios Oikonomou
The world of football is in mourning after the tragic passing of Greek international Marios Oikonomou.
Oikonomou, who played for clubs including Cagliari, Bologna, AEK Athens, and Copenhagen, died at the age of 33 following a motorcycle accident that occurred on Saturday, May 23. Just minutes ago, UEFA released a statement to pay tribute to him.
"On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened by the passing of former Greek international Marios Oikonomou, at the age of 33. Oikonomou earned six caps for Greece and enjoyed a distinguished career in Italy with clubs such as Bologna, Cagliari, Bari, SPAL, and Sampdoria. He also competed in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to his family, friends, teammates, and all who knew him," the statement read.
