Uruguay: Diego Forlán appointed as Celeste head coach

The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) has officially announced the appointment of Diego Forlán as head coach of the national team. The former iconic Celeste striker takes over from Marcelo Bielsa, who stepped down after what Uruguayan officials considered a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Forlán steps in at a time of transition. His contract currently runs through March 2027, at which point the AUF will decide whether to continue with him or bring in a new coach.

An interim mission with several crucial fixtures

According to AUF president Ignacio Alonso, Forlán's appointment is part of a long-term project that has been in the works for several years.

"The AUF Executive Committee chose Diego. We met with him in 2022 to integrate him into the project. Today, he is very enthusiastic," he explained.

The new boss will lead Uruguay in the upcoming international fixtures, including matches during the FIFA windows in September, October, and November, as well as friendlies through March 2027.

He will also be in charge of the U20 national team, which will compete in the South American U20 Championship scheduled for January 2027.

A Celeste legend on the bench

A former captain and a major figure in Uruguayan football, Diego Forlán knows the national team environment inside out. A two-time European Golden Shoe winner, notably with Atlético Madrid and Villarreal, he left his mark on Celeste history, playing a pivotal role during the 2010 World Cup, where he won the tournament's Golden Ball.

Now as a manager, he will have to pass on his experience to a new generation and rebuild an ambitious squad capable of returning to the top.

Limited experience but a highly regarded profile

Forlán already has some experience on the touchline. He managed Peñarol in 2020, overseeing 11 matches, before taking charge of Atenas de San Carlos in Uruguay’s second division in 2021, coaching for 12 games.

With this appointment, the AUF is betting on a former national hero to lead the transition and build for the future. The coming months will reveal whether Forlán can convince the federation to keep him at the helm of the Celeste for the long term.
