Villarreal CF: barely back, Pape Gueye sees red in La Liga

Pape Gueye had a turbulent return to La Liga on matchday 30. The Senegalese midfielder from Villarreal CF received a red card just minutes after coming on against Athletic Bilbao (0-0).

Pape Gueye spent more time in the locker room than on the pitch at the Estadio de la Cerámica this Sunday, April 6. Back after his injury with the national team in March 2025, the Senegalese midfielder was called up against Athletic Bilbao on matchday 30 of the Spanish top flight. He came on in the 63rd minute to replace Dani Parejo. Twenty minutes later, he found himself off the field.

Pape Gueye was sent off in the 81st minute for a dangerous tackle on Maroan Sannadi. He received a red card after a VAR review. A poor comeback for the former Marseille player. He currently has 26 appearances this season with Villarreal in La Liga, with two goals to his name.
