An unexpected marking error by Giuliano Simeone is now at the center of criticism after Spain’s global triumph over the Albiceleste.

Argentina is still searching for answers as to how the 2026 World Cup final slipped away against Spain (0-1, aet). Despite a warm homecoming for the players in Buenos Aires, local media have dissected the decisive goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute.

Substituted on after halftime, Giuliano Simeone is being blamed for his poor marking. La Nación points out that the winger “stopped dead and completely lost interest in Torres” to adjust something on his right boot. The Spanish striker then continued his run and found himself one-on-one with Emiliano Martínez.

For many Argentine supporters, this lapse in concentration cost the Albiceleste the title. Deeply affected, Simeone apologized on social media: “All I can do is say sorry for not being able to bring you the Cup.” The Atlético de Madrid player now embodies the regret after this fatal moment.
