FIFA has come down hard. Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match suspension following his dangerous challenge on Canada’s Ismaël Koné during Qatar's crushing 6-0 defeat to Canada.

The incident occurred last week when Madibo made a tackle from behind on Koné. The referee immediately showed him a red card for dangerous play.

After reviewing the case, FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided to impose a five-game ban on the Qatari player for serious foul play. This sanction will apply to Qatar’s upcoming matches in the tournament, although an appeal remains possible.

The injury suffered by Ismaël Koné turned out to be particularly severe. The Canadian midfielder sustained fractures to both his tibia and fibula, required surgery, and will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.

A major blow for Canada, who lose one of their key players for the remainder of the tournament, while Qatar will have to cope without Assim Madibo for several matches.
