World Cup 2026: fresh lightning delays France–Iraq restart yet again

The clash between France and Iraq remains suspended due to severe weather conditions in Philadelphia. While an overnight restart was initially planned, fresh lightning strikes have been detected near the stadium, once again pushing back the players' return to the pitch.

According to on-site updates, play will not resume before 1:30am (Central European Time). Organizers are closely monitoring the situation before giving the green light.

Rain and lightning complicate the situation

In theory, both teams were set to return to the field around 1:20am for a warm-up session ahead of the restart. However, the rain has intensified and conditions remain unfavorable for play.

With the weather deteriorating, fans in the stands have once again been asked to move to the concourses for safety reasons.

A wait that drags on

The interruption has now lasted many minutes and there is still no official confirmation on when play will resume. Organizers are erring on the side of caution, with safety protocols requiring an additional delay each time lightning is detected in the area.

The players remain sheltered in the dressing rooms, awaiting an improvement in the weather, while fans and broadcasters are left to wait patiently for a potential return to action.
