Ronald Koeman has decided to step down as head coach of the Netherlands national football team following the Oranje’s elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup against Morocco.

This decision comes amid intense criticism directed at the Dutch manager. His approach, considered overly cautious—especially his choice to field a five-man defense in the knockout match—was heavily questioned by pundits and fans alike.

Despite the backlash, Koeman stood by his tactical decisions after the match.

"If I had to do it all over again, I’d do exactly the same. As the coach of the Netherlands, whenever the team concedes an equalizer, I’ll always be criticized for choosing five defenders. But you have the right to criticize. You watch from the stands, I’m with the team, and I would make the same choice again," he stated.

This departure brings an end to his second stint at the helm of the Dutch national side and marks a new chapter for the Oranje, who will now have to search for a new head coach.
