2026 World Cup / Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo leaves all options open
After Portugal's elimination at the hands of Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed that this World Cup was the last of his career, though he stopped short of announcing his international retirement.
Defeated by Spain (1-0) in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, Portugal's journey comes to an endâlikely marking the final World Cup appearance for their legendary captain. At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo has yet to make any definitive statement about the future of his international career.
"The truth is, this was my last World Cup, but as for the rest, Iâll have time to reflect, to be with my family, to avoid making decisions in the heat of the moment, and Iâll continue living my life," said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, visibly moved.
He also made it clear he leaves with "a clear conscience":
"Naturally, Iâm sad to leave the World Cup like this, but as I said yesterday in the press conference, I gave everything, I did my best, and I leave with a clear conscience. Thatâs football, thatâs the life of a footballerâsometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to keep going."
