2026 World Cup: Argentina to take FIFA sanctions to CAS
The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina continues to make headlines. After the sanctions imposed by FIFA a few weeks ago, the 2022 world champions plan to take their case to CAS.
On Saturday, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said it plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the sanctions imposed by FIFA following the incidents that took place after the 2026 World Cup final. In its statement, the AFA said it had received the decisions of the FIFA Appeal Committee, which it had petitioned and which upheld the sanctions against Leandro Paredes and the association itself.
The former PSG midfielder was handed a 10-match suspension for his actions against the Spanish players, while the association was fined $321,000 over discriminatory chants by Albiceleste supporters. It has therefore announced its intention to file an appeal with CAS, based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
FIFA opted to reduce the sanction
“The next steps, aimed at defending the rights of the player and the AFA, will be to request the grounds for the decisions and then take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a fresh review. The association believes it has sufficient factual and legal grounds to justify this appeal,” the Argentine federation’s statement read. It should be noted that FIFA’s Appeal Committee nevertheless “ordered a reduction in the sanction” against Nahuel Molina, cutting it to a four-match suspension and a $60,000 fine.
The Argentine had initially been handed a seven-match suspension and fined 90,000 dollars.
