Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage has opened up about a tumultuous summer transfer window following his June appointment to replace Oliver Glasner, navigating a complex transitional phase made harder by consecutive defeats to Everton and Manchester City at the start of the campaign.

Navigating a complicated transition

Despite the early season struggles and the frantic final days of the market, the Palace hierarchy successfully retained their most vital offensive pillars.

Wingers Ismaïla Sarr and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta were subject to intense interest from Liverpool FC and Aston Villa but the club stood firm, providing Sage with crucial tactical stability.

Speaking calmly about the anticipated chaos, Sage emphasized that he had thoroughly studied the club's environment before his arrival. His absolute focus is now on correcting the team's trajectory on the pitch, starting with their upcoming London derby against Fulham FC.

Late defensive scramble

Replacing departing center-back Maxence Lacroix who secured a move to Chelsea, proved to be an uphill battle.

Sage had identified young Lens defender Ismaël Ganeu as his primary target but the French club refused to sell, ultimately renewing the player's contract.

Sage also expressed immense pride in the board's aggressive pursuit of Malick Fofana. Although the player opted for Sunderland, the manager appreciated the ambition. To offset these missed targets, Palace resorted to late loan deals to reinforce the backline.

While the defense required late scrambling, Sage is highly satisfied with his offensive and midfield reinforcements. The club added significant depth to his tactical arsenal, including:

• Midfield Reinforcements: The acquisition of Quinten Timber and the integration of Ben Chilwell.

Above all, Sage praised the board's resolute stance on 22 year old midfield maestro Adam Wharton. Despite massive financial offers from England's elite clubs, Palace refused to cash in.

"The club was very strong on this file and the player aligns perfectly with this vision" Sage noted

While financial sustainability is a massive win for the boardroom, it places immense pressure squarely on Pierre Sage's shoulders.

He must now integrate a mix of late loan arrivals and bargain attacking signings into a cohesive unit. Following bruising defeats to Everton and Man City, the honeymoon period is officially over, Sage needs immediate results to validate the club's frugal summer strategy.
