AFCON 2027: the truth about a possible change of host venue
According to several Egyptian media outlets, the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations should, at this stage, go ahead as planned, while CAF continues to assess the level of preparedness of the host countries.
Scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, the AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. However, the Confederation of African Football is closely monitoring the progress of preparations in the three countries.
AFCON 2027: Is a change of host country being considered?
According to a CAF source cited by Egyptian outlet FilGoal, postponing the tournament or changing the host country is not being considered at this stage.
“There is no intention to move or postpone the Africa Cup of Nations. For now, the competition will take place as planned,” the source said.
The same source explained that CAF regularly monitors the progress of preparations in coordination with the local committees in the three countries.
“We are monitoring, together with the local committees in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, the level of preparedness of the three countries to host the competition,” she explained.
A comprehensive assessment of the host countries’ dossiers is also scheduled for the end of the year in order to determine their level of preparedness.
"We will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the dossiers of the three countries at the end of this year in order to determine their level of preparedness to host the competition," the source added.
The beginning of 2027 could nevertheless prove decisive. If CAF finds that the three countries will not be ready in time, other options could be considered.
"If, at the beginning of the new year, it is confirmed that the three countries are facing difficulties in being ready, we will certainly turn to other solutions," she specified.
CAF would thus have several alternative scenarios, including transferring the competition to a single country capable of hosting the tournament.
“Alternative plans will certainly be available. The competition could be transferred to a single country ready to host this event, but we do not want to rush and will wait until the beginning of the new year to assess the situation,” the source concluded.
