AFCON: return to a tournament every two years, Claude Le Roy makes a revelation
Former Cameroon, Senegal, Ghana and DR Congo head coach Claude Le Roy recently revisited the sensitive issue of how often the Africa Cup of Nations is held.
A few months ago, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided to move the AFCON to a four-year cycle. But now, the African governing body has announced that it is considering a return to staging the tournament every two years. This about-turn has raised many questions about the body’s governance.
Claude Le Roy spoke to Motsepe
French coach Claude Le Roy revealed that he had personally spoken with CAF president Patrice Motsepe about the issue. Le Roy said he had firmly defended keeping the tournament on a biennial schedule. “It absolutely has to remain every two years, because an AFCON every two years means training grounds, regional development, renovated hospitals… It means an enormous number of things for the African continent,” he said.
