The end is drawing near for Argentina and Lionel Messi. October 6, 2026, will be a special day.

Lionel Messi has decided to bring his international career to an end after another outstanding 2026 World Cup, where he will ultimately lose in the final to Spain (1-0). Argentina has already ushered in its new era by sweeping aside Bolivia by four goals to nil. Cristian Romero has inherited the captain's armband from La Pulga.

Messi will reclaim the armband on October 6 for his farewell match. Cristian Romero praised his predecessor: "We will miss Argentina's captain for the rest of our lives. We will never have another player like Leo. He is the greatest player in history. I would never have imagined becoming captain of the national team. It is an immense responsibility, but I feel ready. Leo has been an example for all of us. He has always taught us to pick ourselves back up," he said.

In the meantime, Messi will receive the highest distinction from Argentina's largest university, Gustavo Yarroch reports. The Higher Council of the University of Buenos Aires has indeed decided to award its most important honorary title, that of Doctor Honoris Causa, to the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. The title is awarded by the university to a public figure in recognition of a career, body of work or exceptional contribution to society.
