Lionel Messi’s final appearance for Argentina on home soil will be played in front of a sold-out crowd. Tickets for the friendly against Benin, scheduled for October 6 at Buenos Aires’ Monumental, sold out in less than two hours on Thursday, September 24.

Ticket sales opened at 6 p.m. Argentine time, exclusively on the Deportick platform. A long virtual queue formed as soon as sales began. Several supporters said they had to wait more than an hour before even accessing the purchase page.

Before 8 p.m., all tickets put on sale for Argentina-Benin had disappeared. The Monumental will therefore be full on October 6 for what is expected to be Messi’s final appearance with the Albiceleste in front of the Argentine public.

Prices ranged from 90,000 to 480,000 Argentine pesos depending on the category. A ticket in the general-admission section was available for 90,000 pesos, while the price for children aged 3 to 10 was 29,000 pesos. The most expensive tickets cost 480,000 pesos.

Messi’s final match with Argentina

The match will have particular significance for the Argentine captain. FIFA confirmed that Messi will play his final match for the national team against Benin on October 6 at the Monumental. The 39-year-old forward had announced his international retirement before agreeing to take part in this farewell match.

Messi currently has 207 caps for Argentina. If he takes part in the match against Benin, he will therefore bring his total to 208 appearances in the Albiceleste shirt.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) had announced the match as an opportunity for its captain to bid farewell in front of Argentine supporters. The federation’s president, Claudio Tapia, also indicated that members of the 2022 world champion team and their families would be invited to the Monumental to accompany Messi during the evening.

Three matches for Argentina

The meeting with Benin will be Argentina’s third and final match during this series of home fixtures. The national team will first face Bolivia on September 30 at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium in Córdoba, then Burkina Faso on October 3 at the Monumental, before meeting the Cheetahs three days later at the same stadium.

For the October 6 match, demand for Messi’s final appearance in Argentina far exceeded the number of tickets available for sale. Just a few hours after ticket sales opened, there were already no tickets left for the evening that will mark the end of his international career in front of the Argentine public.
