Bayern Munich considering Bernd Leno

Bayern Munich are already planning for the future in goal. With Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich both potentially leaving the Bavarian club at the end of the season, the Munich hierarchy is examining several profiles to strengthen the squad. Bernd Leno, currently at Fulham, is among them.

Leno on Bayern’s radar

Aged 34, Bernd Leno has been playing in England for more than eight years. After spending four seasons at Arsenal, the Germany international established himself as Fulham’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2022. His contract with the London club expires at the end of the season, a situation that could interest Bayern Munich.

According to Bild, Leno is a concrete option for the Bavarian club. The goalkeeper also has extensive Bundesliga experience, having made 233 appearances in Germany’s top flight for Bayer Leverkusen.

A backup role behind Urbig?

However, if he moves to Munich, Bernd Leno would not necessarily be expected to immediately take up a starting role. Bayern are reportedly counting in particular on 23-year-old Jonas Urbig to gradually assume an important place in the hierarchy. Leno could therefore join the club as a backup next season.

Manuel Neuer, 40, and Sven Ulreich, 38, are both reaching an advanced age for the position and could bring their time in Munich to an end at the conclusion of the season. Bayern are therefore already working to ensure the succession of their two experienced goalkeepers. Leno’s contractual situation, combined with his experience in the Bundesliga and the Premier League, makes him one of the names being monitored by the German club.
