Champions League 2029: Spotify Camp Nou and Wembley in the running to host the final

Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou and London’s Wembley are the two final candidates to host the 2029 Champions League final. UEFA is set to select the venue on Tuesday, September 15, during a meeting of its Executive Committee in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The decision is approaching for two of European football’s most iconic stadiums. UEFA has officially shortlisted England, represented by Wembley, and Spain, represented by Camp Nou, to host the 2029 final. Both bids were submitted as part of the procedure launched by European football’s governing body in 2025.

The decision will be made during the UEFA Executive Committee meeting scheduled for September 15, 2026. On the same day, the organisation is also expected to award the hosting rights for the 2028 and 2029 finals of the Europa League, Conference League and Women’s Champions League.

Two stadiums with a strong European history

Camp Nou already has a special place in European Cup history. The Barcelona stadium hosted the finals in 1989 and 1999, won by AC Milan against Steaua Bucharest and Manchester United against Bayern Munich respectively. A 2029 selection would allow the renovated stadium to host the final of Europe’s most prestigious club competition again three decades later.

Wembley also has extensive experience of major European fixtures. The London stadium hosted the Champions League final in 2011, 2013 and 2024. Its track record in staging major European events is one of the main strengths of its bid.

Camp Nou’s bid also has another argument in its favour: the stadium is currently undergoing a major renovation. Barcelona wants to restore the venue as a modern, high-capacity stadium capable of hosting the biggest international events.

According to reports published in recent weeks, Camp Nou is considered the favourite in the race, although UEFA has yet to officially announce its decision.

The outcome will therefore be known after the Executive Committee meeting. UEFA must choose between two stadiums with extensive experience of major events and a history already closely connected to European football.
