Champions League: Como targets historic record for an Italian club

Feyenoord

Como

After their 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, Como 1907 could write an even greater chapter in the history of Italian football. Away to Feyenoord Rotterdam this Wednesday, October 14, the Lombardy club is aiming for a second consecutive win in the Champions League, a feat that would see them join Sampdoria and Hellas Verona in the competition’s record books.

In their first-ever Champions League appearance, Como made an impressive start by beating RB Leipzig on September 10. With four goals scored and just one conceded, Cesc Fàbregas’s men got their campaign off to the best possible start.

Against Feyenoord, the challenge now is to confirm that performance. A second victory would allow the Italian club to continue their flawless run and achieve a rare feat in the history of Italian clubs competing in the tournament. According to the statistics compiled ahead of this match, only Sampdoria, in 1991-1992, and Hellas Verona, in 1985-1986, had managed such a start.

Feyenoord looking to bounce back

Como’s opponents head into this second matchday under pressure to respond. On September 9, Feyenoord suffered a 5-1 defeat away to FC Barcelona. The heavy loss has put the Dutch club under pressure ahead of their return to their home ground, De Kuip.

This situation represents an opportunity to confirm their strong start, but the away trip promises to be a difficult one. Feyenoord will look to take advantage of home soil to claim their first points in this league phase.

The Italians will therefore need to be as clinical as they were in their victory over Leipzig. Another convincing performance would allow them to strengthen their position and continue their progress in this first European campaign.

Feyenoord-Como is scheduled to kick off at 18:45 this Wednesday, October 14.
