Cooling breaks: LaLiga has made its decision

During the 2026 World Cup on American soil, cooling breaks sparked controversy. Just days after the tournament ended, LaLiga has delivered its verdict.

Throughout the 2026 World Cup, matches were paused midway through the first half and again in the second to allow players to cool down. Unofficially, it was also seen as an obvious commercial move. This measure was heavily criticized by football fans.

Many fans feared this "idea" would take hold in domestic leagues. In LaLiga, the decision came down this Thursday.

As confirmed by Cadena COPE, Fran Soto, president of the Technical Committee of Referees, announced there will be no widespread hydration breaks in Spain. Such breaks will only be implemented in cases of extreme heat (above 32 degrees Celsius), particularly for matches played in the afternoon in August, as has been the practice for several seasons now.
