Edin Džeko set to extend Schalke 04 contract until 2027
Edin Džeko looks set to continue his adventure with Schalke 04. According to Sky Sport Germany, all parties have reached an agreement to extend the Bosnian striker's contract until June 2027. The medical is scheduled for Sunday and Monday, ahead of the signing of a new deal that will officially seal the veteran's stay at the club until the age of 40.
Arriving in Gelsenkirchen in January 2026 after his spell at Fiorentina, Džeko attracted interest from several clubs. The former VfL Wolfsburg, Manchester City, AS Roma, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahçe striker has ultimately chosen to continue with Schalke, having been convinced by the sporting project presented by head coach Miron Muslić, who was determined to keep his attacking leader.
A decisive arrival in Schalke's promotion push
Despite joining mid-season, Edin Džeko quickly rediscovered his scoring touch. In 11 matches in the 2. Bundesliga, the Bosnian international netted 6 goals and provided 3 assists, playing a direct role in Schalke 04’s return to the top tier of German football.
A shoulder injury suffered while on duty with Bosnia and Herzegovina slowed the end of his campaign, but did nothing to diminish his influence. His experience, positional sense, and leadership were praised by staff and teammates alike, who saw him as a key architect of the club's promotion.
A career filled with success
If made official, this contract extension will reward one of the most accomplished careers in European football. Trained at FK Željezničar before making his name at FK Teplice, Džeko made his mark at VfL Wolfsburg, where he won the Bundesliga in 2008-09 and finished as the league's top scorer the following season.
He then added to his trophy cabinet at Manchester City with two Premier League titles, followed by notable spells at AS Roma and Inter Milan—where he played in the 2023 Champions League final—and most recently at Fenerbahçe.
On the international stage, the Bosnia and Herzegovina captain is also his nation’s all-time top scorer, with more than 70 goals to his name.
Schalke banking on his experience for Bundesliga return
By keeping Edin Džeko, Schalke 04 are placing their faith in an experienced forward to anchor their Bundesliga comeback. Beyond his attacking contributions, the Bosnian is expected to play a pivotal role mentoring a young squad in a season where the main objective is top-flight survival.
If all final details are wrapped up as expected, Džeko will continue his journey in Gelsenkirchen through 2027, aiming to help Schalke 04 secure a lasting place among the elite of German football.
