The latest victim of the French juggernaut is none other than Morocco, who couldn’t muster the resources to put up a fight and ultimately fell 2-0 in the first quarterfinal of the tournament.
According to many pundits, France are the outright favorites for the ultimate crown, so impressive is their collective strength.
With that in mind, Foot Africa reached out to French coach Denis Lavagne, former head coach of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions, to answer the burning question: is France truly unbeatable in this 2026 World Cup?
I think the French team is really strong. They’re solid defensively—they don’t concede goals and give their opponents very few chances.
And then, up front, they have a lethal striker, plus players coming off the bench who can make a real impact late in matches, which is crucial. This is a very, very strong French squad.
Now, to say they’re unbeatable—I wouldn’t go that far. We’ll only know at the end of the tournament. It depends who they’ll face in the semifinals, whether it’s Spain or Belgium.
Then, if they reach the final, we’ll have to see who their opponent will be, because nothing is settled yet.
Only at the end of the tournament will we be able to say if this team is truly unbeatable—after they’ve faced the toughest sides, namely Spain or Belgium, and possibly England, Argentina, or Norway.
For now, this French side is genuinely impressive, both defensively and offensively. We’ll see how things play out at the end of the tournament.
