FC Barcelona: Andreas Christensen could miss two months
Bad news for FC Barcelona: Andreas Christensen could be sidelined for nearly two months after suffering a left thigh injury.
FC Barcelona could be without Andreas Christensen for an extended period. Substituted due to injury on Saturday during the victory over Sevilla FC (3-1), the Danish defender is suffering from a muscle injury to the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps.
The Catalan club initially announced that he would be unavailable for several weeks without giving a precise return date. Initial examinations had confirmed Christensen’s muscle injury, which forced him to leave the pitch in the 59th minute.
An absence that could last two months
According to Mundo Deportivo, the player’s entourage now fears that he could be sidelined for up to two months. Initial estimates suggested four to six weeks, but the tear is reportedly serious enough to require more patience.
Barça had announced: "The examinations carried out have confirmed that first-team player Andreas Christensen is suffering from a muscle injury to the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps. He will be out for the next few weeks, and his progress will determine his availability."
If this estimate is confirmed, Christensen could miss around eight matches, including five in La Liga and three in the Champions League. The fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are notably among the matches he could miss.
A blow amid an outstanding start to the season
This injury is one of the few clouds in an exceptional start to the season for Hansi Flick’s side. Barça have won their first seven La Liga matches, collecting 21 points and scoring 31 goals. On the European stage, the Catalans also began with a resounding 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.
Barça’s attacking power had already been reflected in five matches with at least five goals in their first seven outings of the season. Hansi Flick will now have to maintain this momentum while reorganising his defence without Christensen for several weeks.
