Argentina: AFA wants to lock down Lionel Scaloni!

The AFA wants to secure Lionel Scaloni’s future after eight historic years, four major trophies and another World Cup final played in 2026.

The Argentine Football Association does not want to see Lionel Scaloni leave his post at the end of the year. With the national team manager’s contract expiring in December 2026, the AFA has sent him a proposal for two additional seasons, taking him through to the 2028 Copa América, with an option to extend the spell through to the 2030 World Cup.

According to TyC Sports, the 48-year-old coach has not yet given a definitive response. Discussions have nevertheless begun with his representatives, and the federation is optimistic about a positive outcome. Scaloni had cast doubt on his future after the 2026 World Cup final, which Argentina lost to Spain (1-0).

104 matches and four trophies with Argentina

The AFA’s desire is explained by an exceptional record. Since taking charge in September 2018, Scaloni has managed 104 matches with the Albiceleste, recording 76 wins, 18 draws and just 10 defeats.

Above all, he has won four major trophies: the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. In 2026, he once again led Argentina to the final of the World Cup, before they were beaten by Spain.

Three friendlies before deciding on his future

While negotiations continue, Scaloni must prepare for the next international break. Argentina will face Bolivia on September 30 in Córdoba, followed by Burkina Faso on October 3 at the Monumental. This clash with the Stallions will be the first meeting in history between the two national teams.

The schedule will conclude on October 6 against Benin, also in Buenos Aires. For the AFA, the objective is now clear: retain the coach who brought the Albiceleste back to the summit of world football and prepare the next cycle with him through to 2030.
