FIFA dismisses SAFA appeal over Themba Zwane suspension

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that the appeal to overturn the three-match suspension handed to Themba Zwane was dismissed by FIFA.

Zwane was given his marching orders in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico a fortnight ago after a challenge that resulted into a straight red card.

However, FIFA's disciplinary committee imposed an additional two-game ban, taking the seasoned playmaker's suspension to a total of three games.

The 36-year-old, as a result, missed the group stage matches against Czech Republic and South Korea, and is set to miss the Round of 32 clash against Canada as well.

SAFA's efforts to appeal against the extended ban were in vain, with the world football governing body, FIFA, deeming Zwane's offence severe.

“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we strongly believe that the punishment is far harsher than the offense that Themba is said to have committed,” said SAFA in a statement.

Meanwhile, South Africa qualified for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time in history as they edged South Korea 1-0 at Estadio Monterrey on Thursday.

Hugo Broos and his troops will now square off against co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, 28 June.

The winner of the tie will face either Morocco or Netherlands in the Round of 16, with the global showpiece slowly approaching its business end.
