European lawmakers are demanding an official probe into FIFA following alleged political interference during the ongoing World Cup knockouts.

A coalition within the European Parliament has launched a fierce initiative targeting FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

According to a report by Euronews, an official letter has been dispatched to the football associations of all 27 EU member states. The document strongly urges these national bodies to pressure football's governing institution for a transparent investigation into the sudden lifting of Folarin Balogun’s one match suspension.

The USMNT striker was initially shown a straight red card during the Round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a foul that carries an automatic ban.

Political meddling and a Belgian reality check

The uproar centers on suspected political interference directly from the White House. Critics allege that President Donald Trump’s administration successfully pressured football executives to exploit a disciplinary loophole keeping the American star eligible to play.

Trump later acknowledged speaking with Infantino regarding the dismissal labeling the referee's original decision unfair, though he firmly denied asking for any reciprocal favors.

Ironically, despite Balogun being hastily cleared for the Round of 16, the Americans were thoroughly outclassed on the pitch crashing out of the tournament following a brutal 4-1 defeat at the hands of Belgium.

A Disgrace to Sporting Justice

Lawmakers are pulling no punches in their assessment of the scandal. Irish MEP Barry Andrews slammed the bizarre reversal, publicly stating that Infantino and his organization had predictably surrendered to the American administration.

Andrews described the entire sequence of events as a total disgrace and a severe miscarriage of justice. The political fallout continues to widen as the initiative also referenced a separate letter co-signed by 50 MEPs.

That secondary document demands a rigorous probe into the highly controversial decision to award the US President an inaugural 'FIFA Peace Prize', further questioning the governing body's commitment to neutrality.

A hypocritical departure from historical precedent

This sudden capitulation to political pressure represents a staggering departure from football's historical rulebook. For decades, the governing body has famously maintained a zero-tolerance policy regarding government interference in sporting matters, regularly weaponizing Article 19 of its statutes to suspend entire federations.

Nations like Kuwait and Indonesia have previously faced severe global bans simply due to minor state meddling in their domestic footballing affairs.
