French national team: Didier Deschamps' departure already lamented by the Federation
At the end of this 2026 World Cup, Didier Deschamps will step down as head coach of the French national team.
Yet Didier Deschamps still enjoys the full support of his president, Philippe Diallo. The president of the French Football Federation admits that he would have been in favor of extending the contract of his coach, whose deal is set to expire.
"His desire to leave was a decision Didier had thought over for a long time," the executive told L’Equipe. "Given his results, of course the question of a possible extension could have been raised, if he hadn't announced his departure." he stated.
As for Deschamps' successor, Diallo simply reiterated that his identity will only be revealed after the World Cup.
