Ghana: a new head coach to be appointed soon after the departure of Carlos Queiroz

Ghana is moving quickly to find a new leader for the Black Stars. According to GhanaSoccernet, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that talks are currently underway to appoint the successor to Carlos Queiroz, whose short-term contract expired after the 2026 World Cup.

Gideon Fosu, a member of the GFA Executive Council, confirmed the progress of negotiations. Speaking to Citi Sports, he assured that the Ghanaian national team won’t be without a permanent head coach for long and that a new manager will be in place before the next official fixtures.

“We are still in discussions, negotiations are ongoing. I am confident that, in due time, the president of the Federation will announce the name of the next Black Stars head coach,” he stated.

The official also stressed the urgency of the situation given the imminent resumption of international competitions. “What I can say for sure is that we will have a coach at the helm of the team,” he added.

Queiroz only lasted four months in charge

Appointed last April, Carlos Queiroz was brought in with a mission largely focused on the 2026 World Cup. The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician succeeded Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March, but talks to extend his stay ultimately fell through.

According to GhanaSoccernet, Queiroz was earning $80,000 a month during his tenure in charge of the Black Stars. Financial demands reportedly complicated negotiations over an extension.

Ghana already looking ahead to AFCON 2027

The next head coach will have to get to work quickly. Ghana is set to return to competitive action in September, kicking off the qualifiers for AFCON 2027.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C, alongside Ivory Coast, Gambia, and Somalia. After missing out on the previous Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Ghanaian national team will be eager to return to the tournament’s final stage.
