Gianni Infantino under scrutiny by the IOC Ethics Commission

FIFA’s decision to allow Folarin Balogun to play in the 2026 World Cup round of 16 continues to spark reactions. Gianni Infantino, the head of world football’s governing body, is now under the scrutiny of the IOC Ethics Commission.

The organization FairSquare has brought the case to this commission, arguing that the FIFA president may have breached principles of political neutrality. They particularly criticize the handling of the American striker’s case, whose suspension was lifted just days before the match against Belgium. Balogun had been shown a red card during the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina and was initially set to miss the round of 16. However, relying on its disciplinary regulations, FIFA ultimately cleared him to play.

This decision has been widely discussed, especially after Donald Trump called for a fresh review of the situation. Gianni Infantino had already faced criticism in the past, notably due to his visible ties with certain political figures. This latest episode adds even more pressure on the FIFA president.
