Lille defender Alexsandro has warned Victor Osimhen to expect an intense battle when the French club face Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday 21 October describing their anticipated confrontation as a war.

The Brazilian centre back made the remarks during Tuesday's pre-match press conference ahead of the third matchday of the 2026 /27 Champions League league phase at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The encounter carries additional significance for Osimhen who returns to the club where he first established himself as one of Europe's most promising African strikers before moving to Napoli in 2020.

Alexsandro acknowledged the difficulty of facing the Nigerian international but insisted he was looking forward to the challenge.

Alexsandro sends strong message to Victor Osimhen

Speaking to reporters on 20 October Alexsandro was asked about the prospect of facing Galatasaray's leading striker.

The Brazilian revealed that he had previously encountered Osimhen in a friendly and was fully aware of the challenge awaiting him.

"It's going to be war tomorrow but it will be beautiful too" Alexsandro said according to French outlet Le Petit Lillois.

The defender also admitted that facing Osimhen is never straightforward, highlighting the demanding nature of the individual contest.

His comments were made in a sporting context, reflecting the physical and competitive challenge posed by the Nigerian rather than any personal confrontation between the players.

Alexsandro also addressed Lille's defensive problems in Europe.

While the French club have generally been more solid domestically, they have already conceded six goals in their opening two Champions League matches.

The Brazilian acknowledged that European competition requires greater intensity and defensive concentration, insisting that Lille must improve certain details to achieve better results.

Davide Ancelotti reveals how Lille plan to stop Osimhen

Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti also discussed the threat posed by the Galatasaray striker during his pre-match press conference.

The Italian manager believes stopping Osimhen requires collective defensive organisation rather than relying solely on one centre-back.

As Foot Africa reported in its coverage of Ancelotti's warning about Osimhen, the coach highlighted the Nigerian's exceptional influence during his time at Napoli.

Ancelotti stressed that Lille must remain organised both when defending and when attacking, particularly because Galatasaray possess players capable of exploiting space during transitions.

That tactical approach could prove crucial against Osimhen whose pace, aerial ability and movement behind opposing defences make him a difficult opponent.

For Alexsandro, maintaining concentration throughout the match will be essential to preventing the Nigerian from finding dangerous positions inside the penalty area.

Victor Osimhen returns to Lille six years after his departure

Wednesday's encounter also represents an emotional return for Osimhen.

The Nigerian joined Lille from Belgian club Charleroi in 2019 and quickly established himself as a key attacking figure.

During the 2019 /20 campaign, he scored 18 goal and provided four assists in 38 appearances across all competitions.

His performances earned him Lille's Player of the Season award and the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foé prize, recognising the outstanding African footballer in Ligue 1.

The club subsequently confirmed his transfer to Napoli in July 2020, ending a successful spell in northern France.

Six years later, Osimhen returns wearing Galatasaray colours, having established himself among Europe's prominent centre forwards.

His preparations for the reunion have followed a difficult period.

The Nigerian suffered an adductor injury in September, forcing him to miss several matches before gradually returning to competitive action.

As Foot Africa previously reported on Osimhen's recovery, Galatasaray carefully managed his rehabilitation before bringing him back for their Champions League encounter against Barcelona on October 13.

Osimhen played against the Spanish giants, although Galatasaray suffered a 4-1 home defeat.

Lille and Galatasaray both desperate for Champions League points

The confrontation arrives at an important moment for both clubs.

Lille have lost their opening two Champions League matches, falling 3-2 against Real Betis before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Galatasaray have also endured a difficult start, losing 3-1 against Sporting CP and 4-1 against Barcelona.

Both teams therefore enter Wednesday's encounter without a point.

Lille will be hoping that home advantage helps them secure their first European victory of the season, while Galatasaray need a positive result to revive their hopes of progressing beyond the league phase.

The match kicks off at 16:45 GMT, with the Brazilian defender and Nigerian striker preparing for one of the evening's most intriguing individual battles.
