Ligue 1: Nuno Mendes suspended for three matches after red card
The verdict is in for Nuno Mendes. The Paris Saint-Germain defender has been handed a straight three-match suspension following his red card against Lens (0-1) on Sunday in the Trophée des Champions. The Portuguese international will therefore miss PSG's opening three league fixtures.
Nuno Mendes will be sidelined for PSG’s trip to Rennes on the opening day, as well as the home games against Lille and Monaco on matchdays two and three. He is expected to return on Wednesday, September 9, for the first matchday of the Champions League.
The Portuguese full-back was shown a straight red in the 87th minute against Lens for an elbow at midfield on Poland’s Michal Skoras. Although the player protested the decision, it was upheld by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) disciplinary committee.
A significant blow for PSG
This suspension deprives PSG of a key figure on the left flank for the start of the season. At 24, Nuno Mendes has established himself as one of the cornerstones of the Parisian defense, thanks to his speed, ability to push forward, and influence in the attacking phase.
The sanction comes as the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season kicks off this Friday with Marseille vs Strasbourg. PSG will have to make do without their Portuguese full-back from the very first match in Rennes on Sunday.
The disciplinary committee also handed Kyllian Antonio a two-match suspension after his straight red against Lens for a dangerous challenge on Maghnes Akliouche in the 39th minute.
