Guinea origin sensation Soriba Diaoune delivered another outstanding performance for Lille on Sunday 8 November 2026 scoring once and providing an assist in a crucial 2-1 victory over Rennes in Ligue 1.

The 19 year old opened the scoring in the 24th minute before setting up Nathan Ngoy's winner in the 68th helping Davide Ancelotti's side climb to second place in the French championship with 21 points.

Soriba Diaoune inspires Lille's victory over Rennes

Diaoune broke the deadlock midway through the first half reacting quickly after Ethan Mbappé's backheel was not properly cleared by Rennes defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal.

The youngster produced a composed left footed finish past Brice Samba to put Lille ahead.

Senegalese striker Boulaye Dia equalised seven minutes later, converting from close range following Ait Boudlal's headed contribution.

However, Diaoune proved decisive again in the second half.

His aggressive pressing forced an error from Rennes midfielder Valentin Rongier allowing Nathan Ngoy to regain possession and fire home the winner.

Diaoune was credited with the assist completing a performance that earned him a 7.5/10 rating from Maxifoot which named him its player of the match.

The victory also ended Rennes' lengthy unbeaten home run in Ligue 1.

From Champions League breakthrough to Ligue 1 regular?

Diaoune's latest display follows an impressive run of performances.

On 21 October, the winger scored twice against Galatasaray in the Champions League becoming Lille's youngest goalscorer in the competition.

Although Lille eventually lost 4-2 to Victor Osimhen's Galatasaray, Diaoune's performance attracted considerable attention.

Four days later, he provided an assist against Monaco before producing another decisive contribution against Rennes.

His progress has already been recognised by Lille supporters who voted him the club's Player of the Month for October.

Ancelotti has also praised the youngster's defensive commitment, tactical intelligence and ability to influence matches.

Having initially struggled for regular opportunities, Diaoune is now establishing himself as a serious option on Lille's left wing.

Could Guinea benefit from Diaoune's emergence?

Beyond his growing reputation in France, Diaoune's development presents an interesting question for Guinean football.

Born in Lille on 14 August 2007 to parents of Guinean origin, the winger joined the French club's academy in 2015 after beginning his football education at Lille OMS Fives.

His potential was already attracting attention in February 2025 when Foot Africa profiled him among the promising young players emerging in European football.

Diaoune previously represented Guinea at youth level before featuring for France's U18 and U20 teams.

He has also been included in France's latest U20 squad for November friendlies against Denmark.

His youth international appearances do not, by themselves, establish a definitive senior international choice.
