Manchester United suffered the fastest 2 goal deficit in their Premier League history on Sunday 8 November 2026 after Aston Villa raced into a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford in just three minutes and 40 seconds.

Brazilian winger Alysson opened the scoring after only 59 seconds before Senegal international Nicolas Jackson doubled the visitors' advantage in the fourth minute.

According to Opta, it was the earliest Manchester United had ever trailed by 2 goal in a Premier League match breaking a record established more than three years earlier.

Despite an extraordinary comeback that secured a 4 - 4 draw, Michael Carrick's side left the pitch with another unwanted statistic.

Seven second faster: How Aston Villa broke Manchester United's record

The previous record dated back to 26 August 2023 when Nottingham Forest stunned United at Old Trafford.

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi opened the scoring in the second minute before Ivorian defender Willy Boly doubled Forest's lead.

The visitors were 2- 0 ahead after just three minutes and 47 seconds.

United eventually recovered to win 3-2, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the decisive penalty.

More than 3 year later, Villa surpassed that record by 7 second, with Jackson capitalising on a rebound after goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold Alysson's effort.

The new record also carried a significant African connection, while Awoniyi and Boly established the previous benchmark, Senegal's Jackson was responsible for breaking it.

The striker has been enjoying an outstanding run of form, as Foot Africa recently highlighted in its analysis of his resurgence at Aston Villa.

Three alarming statistics for Manchester United

The opening four minutes were not the only worrying aspect of United's performance.

According to Opta, Alysson became just the third player to score against Manchester United during the opening minute of a Premier League match at Old Trafford after Edin Dzeko in 2014 and Willy Gnonto in 2023.

Villa also became the quickest visiting team to establish a 2 goal lead in a Premier League fixture since Chelsea achieved the feat against Everton in August 2014.

United's defensive problems continued after the interval when John McGinn & Leon Goretzka scored within 8 minutes of the restart to restore Villa's two goal advantage.

However, the hosts demonstrated remarkable resilience.

After initially recovering from 2-0 to 2-2, they fought back again from 4-2 down, with Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu scoring in stoppage time.

United consequently became the first team in Premier League history to recover from a two goal deficit twice in the same match.

Was it Manchester United's worst league start in history?

The answer depends on whether the comparison concerns an individual match or an entire season.

Against Aston Villa, United recorded their fastest two goal deficit since the Premier League began in 1992.

Their overall 2026 /27 campaign has also produced the club's worst start to a Premier League season.

Following the 4-4 draw, Carrick's team have collected just eight points from ten matches, recording one victory, five draws and four defeats.

However, this is not the worst start to a top flight campaign in the club's entire history.

In 1930 /31, Manchester United lost their opening 12 league matches and were eventually relegated from the First Division.

The modern figures nevertheless underline the seriousness of the current situation.

United sit 18th in the Premier League, have failed to keep a clean sheet in their opening ten fixtures for the first time since 1986 /87 and remain without a league victory since August.

While several African internationals featured in Sunday's remarkable encounter, it was Jackson who delivered the moment that rewrote United's unwanted history.

Seven seconds separated the records of 2023 & 2026. But for Manchester United, the concern extends far beyond four disastrous opening minutes, it is an entire season that has begun alarmingly badly.
