Mali: Mamadou Sangaré crowned player of the year

The third edition of the Malian Football Awards delivered its verdict on Thursday the 28th in Bamako. Mamadou Sangaré was named Mali's Player of the Year—a logical accolade for the RC Lens midfield star, who has just completed his first full, standout season in France.

Mamadou Sangaré made a powerful impact in his debut Ligue 1 campaign: 37 matches, 3 goals, 4 assists. The Malian international lifted the French Cup with RC Lens and was honored as the best African player in France (the Marc-Vivien Foé Award). Lens also secured a Champions League berth by finishing second behind Paris Saint-Germain.

At just 23 years old, and after a strong run at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the former Leipzig player expressed his desire to see Mali claim the throne of African football in the coming years.
