WAFCON 2026: Results and Group C standings after matchday one
The opening round of Group C in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations delivered on all fronts. With powerhouse performances and major upsets, unexpected plot twists have already shaken up the group dynamics.
Zambia and Barbra Banda demolish Egypt with a six-goal blitz
The Copper Queens kicked off their campaign in the best way possible. Against Egypt, Zambia left no room for doubt, securing a resounding 6-0 victory at the Rabat Olympic Stadium.
Zambia took the lead in the first half thanks to a penalty from Rachael Nachula, then completely dominated after the break. Barbra Banda netted a stunning four-goal haul in just 30 minutes: a penalty in the 61st, followed by strikes in the 63rd, 88th, and 90+7th minutes, and she also assisted Eneless Phiri’s goal in the 93rd. The final score: 6-0. The prolific striker—who has 12 goals and an assist in 15 matches for Orlando Pride in the NWSL—proved once again why she’s Zambia’s main weapon.
Malawi bring down the champions with a 3-2 shock
The biggest shock came from Malawi. In their WAFCON debut, the Scorchers stunned Nigeria 3-2 at City Stadium. The Chawinga sisters were the difference: Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring in the 75th minute before Tabitha doubled the lead in the 79th.
Nigeria pulled one back through Rasheedat Ajibade in the 90+2nd minute, but time was running out. Temwa Chawinga struck again in the 90+5th, making it 3-1 for Malawi. Nigeria scored once more in the 90+9th through Uchenna Kanu, but it wasn’t enough. Final score: 3-2, Malawi.

After their 6-0 demolition of Egypt, Zambia top the group with 3 points and a +6 goal difference. Malawi are second with 3 points and a +1 difference. Disappointing Nigeria sit third, while Egypt are bottom of the table.
