Champions League: Bayern Munich win at Atlético de Madrid
Bayern Munich secured an important 2-0 victory away to Atlético de Madrid on Tuesday in the fourth round of the Champions League. After a goalless first half, the Bavarians stepped up the pace after the break to make the difference through Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer.
Karl breaks the deadlock
The two teams went into the break level at 0-0 despite an evenly contested first half. It was eventually necessary to wait until the 54th minute to see Bayern take the lead. Lennart Karl found the back of the net to put the visitors in front. Atlético tried to respond, but the Bavarians continued to control the game. In the 74th minute, Konrad Laimer scored Bayern’s second goal, putting his side out of reach.
Diego Simeone made several changes in an attempt to revive his team, notably bringing on Koke, Lee Kang-in and Ademola Lookman around the hour mark. Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth also made way. However, the changes made by the Madrid side did not turn the situation around. Bayern held on to their lead until the final whistle.
Bayern superior in the statistics
The figures confirm Bayern’s control: 59% possession compared with 41% for Atlético, 639 completed passes to 450 and five shots on target to three. Bayern also won more duels (61 to 48), while Atlético committed more fouls (13 to 3).
With this 2-0 victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Bayern Munich therefore leave Madrid with three valuable points in this Champions League campaign.
